Before anesthesia —
what to know before your surgery
Following these instructions carefully is essential for your safety. Anesthesia requires a completely empty stomach and proper preparation. Please read the full list and contact our office with any questions before your procedure.
Nothing by mouth Critical
Do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours prior to your appointment. This includes water, gum, candy, or any other food or beverage. Failure to follow this instruction may result in your procedure being cancelled.
Medications Important
If you take daily medications, please consult with our office prior to the day of surgery. Some medications may be taken with a small sip of water; others must be held. Do not stop taking heart or blood pressure medications without physician approval.
Responsible adult escort
You must have a responsible adult drive you to and from your appointment and remain with you for the rest of the day. You will not be permitted to drive or operate machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia. Uber, Lyft, or taxis are not acceptable — a trusted adult must accompany you.
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of surgery. A short-sleeved shirt is preferred to allow easy access for blood pressure monitoring. Remove all nail polish from at least one finger to allow oxygen monitoring.
No smoking, alcohol, or recreational drugs
Refrain from smoking, consuming alcohol, or using recreational drugs for at least 24 hours prior to your procedure. These substances can interfere with anesthesia and significantly increase surgical risk.
Contact lenses & jewelry
Do not wear contact lenses to your appointment — wear glasses instead. Remove all jewelry, piercings, and hairpins before arriving. Leave valuables at home.
Minors Required
A parent or legal guardian must be present and remain in the office for the entire duration of the procedure for all patients under 18 years of age. Proof of legal guardianship may be required.
